Healthcare Services in Silvassa

Although the industrial revolution started changing the civic scenario of Silvassa since the 1970’s, the healthcare scenario of the place saw very little improvement. In fact, the only existent government medical facility for a long period of time was the Shri Vinoba Bhave Civil Hospital (V.B.C.H.), earlier known as Cottage Hospital, started in the year 1952 with a minimum OPD services and Indoor facility. It was until very recently that the requirement of improved medical facilities was identified to support the ever increasing population of Silvassa.

It was the year 1999, when the Shri Vinoba Bhave Civil Hospital was renovated and dedicated for the local population with its own in-house doctors, medical and paramedical staff. In the year 2013, the ministry of health and family welfare approved the further up-gradation and expansion of the existing Shri Vinoba Bhave Civil Hospital to a mulch-specialty hospital. Rs. 226.08 Crores was sanctioned for this project to be executed in 2013-14.

Since then, a lot of private players have put in efforts to establish competent medical facilities and hospitals in Silvassa. The government has also put in efforts in implementing various government schemes to facilitate reach of medical treatment to various segments of the society. The Sanjeevani Swasthya Bima Yojana has also been implemented to benefit BPL families, whose annual income is Rs.1 Lakh or lesser.
